ROBOTIC NATION
In the Robotic Nation by Marshall Brain he is explaining his reasons of why he thinks that the world is going to be completely run by Robots in about 40-50 years. He talks about how jobs will be taken over by robots that can do simple jobs and pretty much take away the whole blue collar job system. Also he explains why the robotic industry rapidly expands what he does by each year. In the Article he discusses how the world will change in the upcoming 20 years or so and how the world is going to have to adapt to all of the changes.
Marshall says that we are slowly losing our jobs to robots because of how robotics are simply getting better and better. For instance the way that the we pay at a Home depot store or Wal-Mart with the whole cash yourself out registers that have no need for an actual person to be there. Also like how you can just go to an ATM and get as much money out as you would like, Well if you can afford it that is. Also he is using Moore’s law to make a point of how CPU’s are highly advancing with each passing year. “You have probably heard about Moore's Law. It says that CPU power doubles every 18 to 24 months or so.” Marshall says in his article to explain how CPU’s are progressing further and further.
Brain mentions that jobs already are at a loss and it will just get worse as the years pass. Just in the fast food industry there are about 35,000 jobs that will be lost to Robots, That is if robots will actually take over jobs such as those. Brain also mentions that Robots will take over construction jobs and travel and right there is about 10 million jobs lost with just those two fields of work. He also says that they are saying that there will be away to employ the unemployed by this time with a job that no one has even come up with an idea for yet.
I do not believe what he says because the government probably will not allow this to happen because of the high percentage for unemployment especially for the United States. We are already in a type of depression and this will just make it worse even though he is saying that it will be in the year 2040. Robots should just be used for certain jobs and not every job known to man if that is the case then what is the use for man when this happens? I do believe what he is saying might happen but I still don’t think that it will be allowed just because what it will do to the economy and the culture of the U.S.
Moore’s law is certainly a valid law because it has been the truth for a good 20 years or so now and it does not seem to be slowing down at all. Computers are always going out of date with new and more advanced programming and technologies just take example of mice it went from ball mice to optical and now to wireless optical mice what is next? Maybe you can move the mouse with your mind? Who knows with all the advances in technology so rapidly happening. Brain says in his article “A CPU in the 2040 time frame could have the processing power of a human brain, and it will cost $1,000.” I don’t know if it will come to be that fast because after all it is a human brain that comes up with the technology to make this type of things but after all it is technology and it is always surprising.
All the Brain says could come true in the mere future but I that is a long ways away 50 years or so from now. There could be robots taking over our jobs but there is a chance that they won’t be that advanced yet and we will still have our blue collar jobs to work at and support our families with. We can not know for sure what will happen in the next couple decades but I think it can only lead to good things to come for our country and the people who live in it.
